Robert Redford to produce and act in Jackie Robinson biopic

Hollywood actor, director Robert Redford is set to produce and take a starring role in a film about baseball star Jackie Robinson. No Redford is not going to try to portray Jackie, the first major league African-American player of the modern era,
Sports broadcaster ESPN said Monday its’ company’s films division was teaming with Redford to make the film, which will focus on the relationship between Robinson and Brooklyn Dodgers’ president Branch Rickey, who will be played by Redford.
Robinson’s debut for the Dodgers in 1947 ended several decades of segregation between black and white players in American baseball, but was fraught with struggle.
The project has the blessing of Rachel Robinson, Jackie Robinson’s widow, as well as Branch Rickey Jr. and Major League Baseball. Robert Redford has been working on this project for several years, with Thomas Carter set to direct. No details yet on who might play the role of Jackie Robinson.
