Kylie Minogue reveals doctors missed finding her cancer the first time

Kylie Minogue, who is in the US promoting her album X, opened up during an interview with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, saying: “This is an opportunity for me to say something that I have not said before.

“I was misdiagnosed initially. So, my message to all of you and everyone at home is, because someone is in a white coat and using big medical instruments doesn’t necessarily mean they are right. If you have any doubt, go back again.”

Kylie, 39, said she had a mammogram and given the all-clear before she embarked on her Showgirl concerts in 2005. But two weeks later Minogue found a lump in her breast, and the diagnosis was reversed when she went for a second check-up in her home town of Melbourne while she was halfway through the 57-date world tour. Kylie said she had been inspired to speak out about the misdiagnosis after listening to US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton talking about the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

She said: “I was watching the senator before and I back her up 100 per cent that it’s in the diagnosis and the early treatment. I actually did my Showgirl tour having been for a check and told everything was fine.”

DeGeneres had earlier revealed how she was given the all-clear after a mammogram – but found a lump just two weeks later. It was removed.

Kylie told her: “I had no intention of saying that today.

“But with what you were talking about before, I didn’t realise it was a subject so close to your heart as well.”

She cancelled the Australian leg of her Showgirl tour after being told she had cancer but made a triumphant return to the stage 18 months later.
