George Lucas predicts Indiana Jones will disappoint

George Lucas predicts Indiana Jones will disappointDespite an all-star cast and direction by long-time friend Steven Spielberg, George Lucas has some cautionary words for the upcoming return of Indiana Jones.  Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, will be released on May 22nd, with Harrison Ford back as Dr Jones and Karen Allen returning as love interest Marion Ravenwood, while John Hurt will play her father Abner. Cate Blanchett is also on board as the villainous Agent Irina Spalko, Ray Winstone features as Dr Jones’ rival Mac and young star Shia LaBeouf takes on the role of tearaway Mutt Williams, who rumours suggest could be Dr Jones’ son.

The plot of the film that sees Harrison Ford returning as the adventurous archaeologist after almost 20 years has remained secret, but a recent teaser trailer has piqued fans’ hopes of a triumphant comeback.

Even so, George Lucas Lucas, who co-wrote and produced the film, has warned fans to lower their expectations of the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones film.
The Star Wars creator said his experiences with his films set in a galaxy far, far away have led him to believe that audiences will almost certainly be disappointed by the revival of Indiana Jones.

“When you do a movie like this, a sequel that’s very, very anticipated, people anticipate ultimately that it’s going to be the Second Coming,” he explained to USA Today.

“And it’s not. It’s just a movie. Just like the other movies. You probably have fond memories of the other movies. But if you went back and looked at them, they might not hold up the same way your memory holds up.”

Lucas continued: “When people approach the new [Indiana Jones], much like they did with Phantom Menace, they have a tendency to be a little harder on it.

“You’re not going to get a lot of accolades doing a movie like this. All you can do is lose.”

Words of wisdom or sour grapes?

If Lucas is comparing Indiana Jones to Phantom Menace, then, yes, we’re in trouble.

So Lucas is playing “blame the victim”. It’s the AUDIENCE’s fault that Phantom Menace didn’t get the accolades it “deserved”. It’s the AUDIENCE’s fault that it was unwatchable, horribly written, terribly acted, and basically a muddled nonsensical mess for 2 hours.

George, why can’t you just admit you made a BAD movie. That you made 3 BAD movies? OK, ROTS wasn’t so bad– actually, it was pretty good, so I take that back. But at least with Shia LaBeouf, you have a young male lead who can ACT. (cough cough).

I don’t need to be told IJ&CS is just a movie– please. But I am looking forward to seeing it. And in Spielberg’s hands, I think I’ll get my $10 worth.

I agree with Ivy. Lucas is in no position to start lowering expectations because the public was appalled by his “Phantom Menace.” Back then, I knew we were in trouble when the opening titles started rolling and it became clear the engine of his long-awaited prequel was TAXES. I sat there in the theater absolutely stunned. I guess he was referencing the “taxation without representation” stuff from the American Revolution. In any event, it was a poor choice of a plot to hang a movie on. And, yeah, he is terrible, for the most part, at casting. Can you imagine what Heath Ledger might have done with the role of Anakin Skywalker?

So now we’re all waiting to see what Steven Spielberg has wrought with IJ4. Good thing he relented and directed the movie himself. I have a hunch that was the only way Harrison Ford would do another one. I’m a bit apprehensive, however, because I read that both Spielberg and Ford were not at all happy about the “crystal skull” plotline and initially begged off. In the end, I guess they figured that, skull or no, a sequel was bound to make a bazillion dollars and they might as well get a cut of the action.
