Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, whose teachings were adopted by the Beatles and millions of other followers, died last night. Maharishi, who founded and developed the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique, died at his home in the Dutch town of Vlodrop. The worldwide headquarters of his Transcendental Meditation (TM) movement was also in Vlodrop. The cause of death has yet to be established, but it appeared to be “natural causes, his age”, according to the group’s spokesman. Born around 1917, the Maharishi was believed to be 91.
Maharishi introduced TM - a Hindu practice of mind control - to the West in the late 1950s. Initially dismissed as hippie mysticism, the movement has gradually gained medical respectability, and is now followed by millions across the globe.
But the movement first hit the headlines after the Beatles visited his ashram in India in 1968, although he had a famous falling out with the rock stars when he discovered them using drugs at his Himalayan retreat.
On a somewhat eerie ending note, last week a spokesman for the Maharishi had announced he was stepping down as the leader of the TM movement. Maharaja Nader Raam was appointed the new global leader for the movement which has some 5 million followers worldwide, according to their website.
