An initial autopsy into the death of Hollywood actor Heath Ledger was ‘inconclusive’, and more tests are needed, the medical examiner’s office said Wednesday, a day after the 28-year-old actor was found dead with sleeping pills nearby.

The New York City Medical Examiner carried out the autopsy on Ledger at its Manhattan base to try and determine what killed him. the Medical Examiner’s office will carry out additional tests, which could take up to ten days to complete.

Police officers say that they discovered prescription and non-prescription sleeping medication in the apartment where the ‘Brokeback Mountain’ star was found dead on Tuesday.  The pills were not scattered about as first reported, some were in the medicine cabinet and some in other rooms. At least one container was on Ledger’s nightstand. Police reportedly found sleeping pills and an anti-anxiety drug in the bedroom.

Police insiders say the current “operating theory” is that Ledger’s death was most probably an accidental one and not suicide.
