It has bee confirmed fifth-season runnerup “American Idol” (from 2006) star Katharine McPhee has been dropped by RCA Records.
The lovely McPhee is the latest “AI” finalist to be pushed from the BMG nest - following Season 2’s Ruben Studdard and Season 5’s Taylor Hicks.
McPhee’s first CD for RCA entered the charts at No. 2 in February 2007, but failed to go gold. Her defenders complain that RCA didn’t give her the time or promotion she needed.

Katharine is in negotiations with another major label now, hopefully Warner. And BMG is getting really testy and defensive because people realize that they mishandled her from the very beginning. Releasing her debut album during the slowest sales period of the yearwhen it was ready to go two months before that, then giving her a boring cookie cutter first single when there were a half dozen much better choices on her album, then failing to promote her second single at all. People question that kind of incompetence. Then they release a statement saying that they sunk “millions” into her. Right. Anybody that believes that is either incredibly naive or pure stupid. What did they spend it on? That wonderful backing track they gave her for her radio tour in place of a live band?
