The 19-year-old actress Nikki Blonsky will pick up the Rising Star Award next month at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala thanks to her breathtaking portrayal of Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. Netflix will be hosting an outdoor sing-along screening of Hairspray during the festival. Into the Wild actor Emile Hirsch will pick up the other Rising Star Away also on Jan. 5.

In a previous interview star John Travolta was quoted as saying: “I thought Nikki was so sensational, so off-the-hook original. It was almost otherwordly,” he continues. And her timing, and her knowledge of how to play something, comic timing, her musicality and her movement. This is A Star is Born. Every couple of decades you get a Streisand, a Minnelli… a Nikki.”
