Denial Now Also A City In Vietnam
Posted on March 22nd, 2007 by EllenTime to get a little philosophical for all you Hot Mommas out there: Why do celebrities ever bother to deny anything any more? I’m not talking about business (ie “I’m in this new movie but the contract hasn’t been done yet, plus it’s Britney Spears‘ first post-rehab role, so I can’t talk about it”) denial. I’m talking about personal denial of things that are true — like Angelina claiming she’s not adopting after being photographed in Vietnam, only to turn around and sell the photos to People.
I’m not sure what compels celebrities to stick to the white lie when the truth might be so much easier. Here are some reasons I thought of…
“I deserve some kind of personal life.”
If you’re an A-list star, anything you do in public is fair game. Sorry, it isn’t fair, but that’s the price of fame in the 21st century. If you don’t want to be followed, well, that’s what giant Hollywood Hills mansions and private party rooms are for.
“I shouldn’t do the paparazzi any favors by alerting them to where I am or what I’m doing.”
Chances are if you’re pregnant, getting married or on your way to rehab, the paps will figure it out anyway. And they’ll make you look stupid with photographs of what you claim you’re NOT up to.
“Why should anyone care anyway?”
Because you’re a celebrity. That’s what we’re about. And lying to your fans? Is a way to make your fans not be your fans any more.
I don’t know. What do you think? Are Angelina’s white lies a necessary protection for her family? Should the short press release replace “No comment”?

it does seem like it would be less hassle. for everyone involved.
i’m fine with them wanting their privacy, but if that’s the case then don’t go places where people want to be seen. don’t lunch at the Ivy and then go dancing at Hyde and complain about the paps taking your photo. the celebs who really don’t want it manage to stay out of the mags for the most part.
