Are double strollers a necessity?

Posted on July 14th, 2006 by Hot Momma

Please help! Just when I thought I talked myself out of getting a double stroller..my husband insists we need one? Do we really? What are your experiences with them? They are soo freakkking huge…I just hate the thought of walking around the mall or a store with a limousine sized stroller. Ahhhhh! 6 weeks to go!

You definitely need one. I am 30 weeks preggo with my second and I wouldn’t go without one. I don’t think I’ll be bringing to to the mall though. A single stroller and a sling should be fine for that but walks to the park and such would be so much easier with the double stroller. I would make it a must.

I have 3 year old and a five week old and I don’t have a double stroller, hell I don’t have a stroller in general! The baby is always in a sling or mei tai. I guess it would depend how often you go out for long periods or just you and the two kiddos!

My kids are 20 months apart. It depends on your lifestyle. I had to have one, because I travel with them alone quite a bit and could not have managed the airport without it. Also, we live near NYC and could not have managed those walks either. Apart from those two situations, I’m not sure I really needed it. I have used it in the mall, though…

You certainly won’t need it immediately, so you could just wait until after #2 gets here to decide. I had the twin traveller Maclaren and love it.

Find the stroller with the little platform for Baz to stand on- it’s behind the seat for the baby. The kids love it, and it’s much easier to push than a double. And if you decide to buy a double, look for the adjustable ones where they can face each other. Keeps ‘em entertained! :)

I have two girls that are 15 months apart and we bought the Eddie Bauer Transit Tandem Stroller from Target for $139.00. I folds up easy and it’s very small and light. Easy to maneuver through stores. Fits in the truck of a car or would even fit on the floor in the back seat. It’s smaller and lighter than my single stroller that was purchased as a “travel system” with a baby carseat. We took it to Mexico and it worked like a charm on and off the plane and in and out of buses and taxis. Take a look at it - I’d highly recommend!! Downfall - not a huge basket underneath to hold stuff but we always have a backpack.

My opinion - NO! I had one and then it became a pain because my oldest daughter was too heavy and it offset it and made it hard to push and turn. And she is just a teenie weenie girl. For me it was easier to do the oldest in a single stroller (or walk) and the baby in a Snugli/backpack (backpack when they are a little older obviously). I liked having the control of a snugli when my baby was “new” and she was happier being close to me. I hate the infant car carrier seats with a passion because I am a “teenie weenie” girl myself and I found them really heavy. It’s easier this way because if you are in a real rush you can just grab a cheapy umbrella stroller (I kept my fancy schmancy expensive one and an umbrella one in the trunk) and “throw” the baby in the snugli and off you go!
Now I am stuck trying to sell my double one.

My two are 2yrs and 2wks apart and I never used a double stroller. The youngest always road in the sling and the oldest rarely wanted to ride in the stroller by the time he was that age anyways. We did do a Maclaren triumph single so that if the oldest want to ride he could since it goes to 55lbs and I sling the younger one while he rides. Now that the younger likes the stroller he usually rides and the older walks.

I insisted on getting one of those double strollers and I’ve used it only about 5 times (I bought it 2 years ago)! I hated it! It was so hard to push and steer! My back was killing me when I was done! That’s just my opinion….it probably depends on the model too, I bought a Jeep brand.

I have 2 daughters 22m and 7m. I NEED my double. But I do NOT let my older daughter walk ANYWHERE. #2 was planned so when my oldest started to walk we resisted the urge to let her walk about stores and look “Oh so Cute”. It makes it much easier for me to go out with both of them, no fight about riding in the stroller, that’s all she really knows. We have the new combi tandem, it weighs like 15lbs and folds smaller than any other tandem we have seem. For $260.00 it’s well worth it. The baby store near Ala Moana sells Combi.

My kids are 2 years 1 month apart and we got a double stroller simply because we like to take long walks and having a 2 year old walk long distances was simply too cruel! LOL So we got the double stroller and didn’t need to worry about tired, little feet. :O)

How old is your son? My daughter was almost 3 when my son was born. We didn’t get a double seater because I, like you, couldn’t bear the thought of the “limo”. It worked out fine for us, but as I said, my daughter is a little older. There are times I would like to have SOMETHING to put her in, but all in all it’s been ok.

My younger 2 were 19 mos apart so it was a necessity. We still use it though and they are 3y and 18 mos. I sometimes will let my 3y old walk but he is a wild guy, so it’s always nice to have the threat of the extra seat at least. We have the graco duoglider and yep, it’s bulky, but it’s also comfy for the kids and has a nice basket and cupholders etc…it’s a trade off.

I completely see where you are coming from… we have a 4 year old, a 2 year old and an infant and friends recommended one called a SIT N STAND - I love it! Its much smaller and more compact than a traditional double and it is very versatile too!

i couldnt live without it. but i got a huge eddie bauer one and an umbrella one. we never use the big one. its too heavy and too hard to get out of the car! we only use it at the zoo or places like that. i use the double umbrella all the time. its light and easy. plus, when you’re holding a baby it’s really hard to manaage if your toddler decides to take off and run away!

I don’t think you need it. You could push Baz in an umbrella stroller or let him walk — and then sling (or Baby Bjorn) your baby girl.

I have twins, so I did get the side-by-side jogging stroller — and I used it all the time when they were babies. I haven’t used it in a long time though. I think if I didn’t have twins, I wouldn’t have bought one. It is very bulky.

They have some really cool fabrics in slings these days.

it’s a good thing to have. so maybe you won’t use it too often, but if the hubby wants it, i say go for it!!! it’s nice to have the option, you know? especially for him to take the kids out of the house for a few hours and let you get some napping time or much needed alone time.

I have an almost 3 year old and a 3 week old. I love my double stroller. Like you…I debated back and forth if I needed one or not. Finally bought the Baby Trend Sit n Stand from Target. I love it! We can no go on walk around the neighborhood w/o a problem. I like it because it’s not too wide to fit through isles…just a little bit longer than usual is all. I would say yes…get one!

I’m so glad you guys all posted your comments. I’ve been trying to decide if I want to spend the money on this or not.

I have 3 year old and a 3 month old. I usually put him in the sling and she rides in the stroller. I couldn’t figure out which one I wanted: I double jogging or double ‘mall’ stroller. I can only afford one. After hearing your comments maybe I just won’t get one. Thanks guys!!

I am 35 weeks pregnant and have been debating the exact same thing. The conclusion I have come to is that I will purchase a hot sling for my newborn daughter and my 2 1/2 year old son can be in the umbrella stroller. It has been nice to see all this feedback. Like hotmamma, I have no interest in a big bulky stroller to deal with. We already have 2 as it is! (a travel system and an umbrella stroller)

There are some narrow, lightweight double strollers out there. I have 11 month old twins and I couldn’t live without mine. They recently outgrew the tandem so now I use a side by side. It really depends on your lifestyle. My sister has a 3 and a 1 year old and she got the Lascal Buggy Board and attached it to her single stroller. This gives the bigger kid a chance to rest or walk and its so much cheaper than a double stroller. Good Luck!

I had a double like way back in the day(my kids are now 8 and 5) and I used it all of once….I usually held my youngest in a snugli or his seat and held onto my daughters hand when we went anywhere..Guess it all depends on whether or not you think you can handle both children when you go into a shopping center…

I got mine the day after my first outing with my NB and almost 3YO. I had a single stroller with the baby, and the older one bolted–she was hlaf-way to another store by the time I caught her. I used mine until the older one was 5, especially around the mall. It let them have a toy, snack, etc. and entertain themselves while freeing up my hands and saving my back!

Get the double stroller. My wife and I have the phil and teds E3. It is pricy but absolutely the best double I have ever seen. Tried the sit and stand and it failed horribly. If Baz is as active as our son he won’t like it. You can get them at Baby Emporium downtown too. We read a lot of reviews and I was skeptical given the $475 price tag but I promise it is worth it. For you trendy Moms they come in lime green, red, orange, black, charcoal, and sand. I know I sound like an advertisement but I spend exhausting hours checking them all out.

    Hot Momma,
I have a 1 1/2 year old and am expecting my 2nd - just found out - and I had a double stroller when I was a nanny for another child and I HATED it. It was sooo large. I just recently purchased the ERGO BABY CARRIER, which is the most comfortable thing in the world and slings up nice. You carry your child either front or back and my child has fallen asleep in there every time, and they are the best for your back. Works like a charm. So I plan on using the stroller and slinging one up. At least check out the ERGO it can be used with infants and when they get much older…Good luck. BTW I think you are the cutest pregnant woman ever…I get fat everywhere, not just a bump…too bad for me…

It will definitely help you to get a double stroller, especially if your first tends to get a little jealous. That way he feels he gets the same attention the new baby gets. On the other hand, if you decide to get one, try to verify how difficult it is to store it in your car, or if it´s too heavy. There are some that are very beautiful, but when you want to put them in the car, they are either too big or too heavy or both. If you are used to taking daily walks, it´s a must, because even if you won´t use it often, there will be times when you´ll be grateful to have one LOL….

Another thumbs up for the Maclaren Twin. My sone was 1.5 when the baby was born (they’re 3 and 1.5 now) and it worked out great. I did start off doing the older in the single stroller (only because I soooo looooved my Inglesina single) and baby in the bjorn, but they get heavy really fast and I was not into the whole sling thing. So I got the double and it was great. I can get through doorways no problem- its about as narrow as a wheelchair and with it being side by side, the weight distribution is a lot easier than a front and back (I had one of those and HATED it)
Get a double- free up your hands and be able to go out and do stuff!!

What are your age differences? I have the peg perego aria double- HATE IT- my kids are 24 months apart and that waste of $400 is collecting dust in my garage. I used it for about 6 months, worthless… I do have a double jogging stroller that I use all the time, for Seaworld and walking around town and the beach, not great for the mall, but, who are you kidding, your mall days are numbered once there are 2 kids who can try to escape from a stroller.
I agree with those that say wait a few weeks… and, I actually wished I got the sit and stand- that thing isn’t too big, and I could probably get my (now) 3 year old to get onto it, rather than david blane her way out of the other stroller.

Oh, I just left a message about hating my dumb Peg Perego- but, forgot, if you have the $$, I HIGHLY recommend (based on a friend who I am jealous of her purcase) the Phil & Teds stroller, it looks like a single jogger- but, there is a seat for the toddler below- and a basket, AND… has a thing you can buy to put the infant seat in. If I were smart I woudl have purchased that as my first and only. And.. other great thing, the wheels are better than a jogger, move more easily. A must buy for anyone- should have done it. I think you can get it at Right Start!

My daughter was 3 when my son was born and I’ve never owned one. DD always wanted to walk when we were anywhere and wouldn’t stay in the stroller. Now (3 years leter) we don’t have a single stroller we use. I would say you don’t need one if you can use a sling for awhile when the baby is little.

I am with monkeyandpeanutsmom…I have 3 kids, all two years apart, never had a double stroller. By the time the baby came each time the older one didn’t want to sit in it. And, with everything else it was just one more thing to take up space. Used the single and a baby bjorn. Of course, my “babies” are 5,7,9 now, so it was a while ago. Actually, I dont know that my middle child EVER sat in the stroller for very long. Enjoy your last few weeks of being preggers!
